This week's thinking

___I got a bad mark on every important subjects. I know why. I didn't try my best and I shouldn't play computer games when we were working at class time. I must change my grade at the end of this term. I should do my homework in my best way and prepare for my every test.
___On this weekend , I watched a English movie , it's a movie that is talking about a boy who want to play basketball as Michel Jordan and then he did it! I also wrote two reading log. One is a newspaper article and the other one is a poem. For me , reading a poem is much harder to read anyone else because we have different culture. Everyday I listen to many English songs and foe this weekend I sing the song called mockingbird.
___That's all.

Samuel De Champlain

Questions :
1a. Find a picture of Samuel De Champlain. What does he look like? Explain the picture in 5-8 sentences.

In this picture , he has a not long and not short with black and white hair. He has a bear and a mustache. He is wearing a kind of thick clothes that I have ever seen. He is very old at that time. The picture I found is not easy and has a lot of information to write.
He is a man......

1b. Remember to answer 1a before you do this question. Who is he? What is his nationality? What is his background?

Samuel De Champlain (ca. 1570-1635) was a French geographer and explorer whose mission was to establish a joint French and Native American agricultural and fur-trading colony. In 21 voyages to New France he laid the foundations for modern Canada.
Samuel De Champlain was born at Brogue, a small Huguenot seaport town in Saintlike. He was probably born a Protestant, but sometime before 1603 he embraced the Roman Catholic faith. He had served against the Catholic League in the army of Henry IV until 1598. By 1601 he was indulging his love of travel and the sea and extending his expertise in navigation. The background is nothing.

2. What is his relationship with Canada? Why is he important to Canada?

In every way but name, Samuel De Champlain was Quebec City's and New France's Governor. Some say that the King Henry IV made him his "royal geographer", but it is unproven and may come from Marc Longboat books: Champlain never used that title.

3. When did he explore? What was happening during history at this time?

Samuel De Champlain's determination to succeed in establishing a French colony in America that earned him, since the 19Th century, to be named "The Father of New France". He was also integral in opening North America to French trade, especially the fur trade. French colonization on the shores of the Saint Lawrence River strongly began in 1634 and 1635, during the two last summers of his life, with the arrival of the many staying families recruited by Robert Giffard.

4. Where did he explore? Find a map to help you answer this question. Post the map here and then explain.

In 1603 he went on his first voyage to Canada , as geographer on a fur-trading expedition. He travelledup the Saguenay , St.Lawrence , and Richelieu rivers and used the information he collected to make a very accurate map of Canada from Hudson Bay in the north down to the Great Lakes. In 1604 , Champiain made his second trip to North America. He was looking for a place where French people could make a permanent settlement. Champiain remained for three years , exploreing the Atlantic coast from the Bay of Fundy down to Cape Cod. On his third trip in 1608 , Champlain founded a settlement and trading post along the St.Lawrence River that eventually became the city of Quebec. It was the first permanentwhite settlement in Canada , which makes Quebec the oldest city in Canada.

Because he want discover a water route across the American continent! He wasthe founder of Quebec.Hwas sent by King Henri IVand set up trading posts. He set up the posts Port Royal , and Kebec (Algonquin word for Quebec , where the river narrows.)I think that he was sent mostly to make settlements for France , to gain more land.

REFLECTION

1. What have you learned since September in Canadian Studies? (Or since you started to take the class)
I have learned how to write an essay. There are 2 kind of essays we have learned. They are Personal Narrative Essay and Exposition Essay. The first one is talking about a story that is happened on yourself. The second one is talking about some example of the topic of the essay. I also learned how to write a reading log. Every reading log should have page , date , author and literary genre on the top of it. Then , you should write what is it about , the questions after reading , the new words you haven't learned before , your favourite part and your least favourite part. I learned a lot of new words in the provincial exam and we got into a group and make a lot of fun. We have made a viking ship together , it make us know more about it , so interesting!

2. What is the most memorable lesson you remember? (if you weren't here, maybe at another school)
The most memorable lesson for me in this school is the lesson that Ms.Chan told us to make the viking ship as a group of three. BO , LYM and I are in a group. When we were trying to make our viking ship. It had a lot of things when we plan it. At first , we have no material do make it. At the end of that class , we decided to use two big bottles to make it , but the next class , when we decided to make it , Ms.Chan took a lot of material :paper boxes , small kites , etc. So we started make it together. First , we cut the paper box and make it together looks like a ship. Then put the adhesive tape on it many many times that it can keep the water away. We found out a big , long truncheon and use it as the ship's back stay. Next , we cut a lot of red "flags" and stick them on the viking ship.
3. Think about your life as a student here since September. Have you changed? How?
I have changed a lot. I didn't do my homework very much last term. This term , I try not to be lazy and do my homework to get a better mark. I didn't like to talk too much and to have a performances , I can feel I like it now. I can write more sentences in an essay and can write a long reading log. Just a little bit changed I think...

4. What is your goal for yourself by June? What is your plan to study?
I want to get a better mark. I don't want to get the same mark as this term. I want to change each of my homework better. I need to write more to change my way of writing. And I need to do all of my homework and try my best to do it.

5. What are you most proud of in school since September? Have you done your best?
I didn't done my best. I wanted to be better , but I just lazy and forget something when I was doing some of my homework. The most thing I was proud of is to make the puppet show and the vikingship. That's a good way to connect with other students and we can use our hand to make our own things.

Bonus
1. Is there anything else you want to tell me or reflect about?

Just to help me to get a good mark...Also , I would help me myself.

Final Essay For this Term

Explorations can create conflict and misunderstanding

__In this world , lands were always be found out by explorations. There were many kinds of explorations long time ago. Some of them found a new land and take care with the native people , and some were not. When the explorers got on to the land , most of native people won't let them on and they would be looking strange at them. If the explorers can't give the things they like or need , the native people may not welcome to them. If their language are not the same , that would be very difficult for them to conmmunicate. That's may be very easy to create conflict and misunderatanding.

__Also , some great people find a land but lost his life. Mr.Magellan--the man who found India was killed by native people. He in order to conquer this fertile and rich land , he had a lot of bold ambitions to do this. He attempted to use the native people's conflict to achieve his purpose , but in a conflict with local tribes , the Magellan was dead.

__Magellan fleet last Nov.28,1520 exit of the Strait of 550 kilometers in length into the vast Pacific Ocean.Magellan led the remaining three boats started the journey across the South China Sea. At first , they sail north , began to change after the voyage to the northwest and the direction of flight due west to the Moluccas. Although Magellan awarded of the Moluccas near the equator , but still command the fleet crossed the equator , they sailed to the north latitude of 10 degree near by the water area.

__However , there were a little foods on the boat and water to eat and drink. The most terrible thing is that almost everyone on the boat infected with the scurvy.

__Soon , Magellan become the new protector of Christians. He was in a conflict between two leaders of the island. April 21,1512 night , Magellan led his 60 men took three boats to their and disaster killed by axes.

__Now , you can see he was one of the explorer that was killed by the conflict of the exploration. The explorers won't create conflict and misunderstanding if they just wanted to open their mind. The people from the same country as the explorers must be wanted to have a bigger house , a bigger land , they must let the explorers to find a new land and make some of the people can live there. Some explorer started to argue with these native people and then they started war. That's why exploration can create conflict and misunderstanding.
