I don't think this picture is realistic image , because there is a man stading between the two groups of people when they were shooting the arrows. If the man stding there , he will die soon. I think the drawer thought the draw paper is too small that he can't drow too far about people. And he can't draw people very small. That's why I don't think it's a realistic image.

Bay is an indentation of a shoreline larger than a cove but smaller than a gulf.

I like this picture because this picture shows a shiney morning on the seashore. The sun shine looks like yellow , the sea is blue , together they become green. Green is one of my favourite colors and I also like beach and shine.
The vegetation of this region includes mixed forests, meadows, and fields. The sandy soil was perfect for planting corn, squash, pumpkins, and beans.

The Lonely LandA.J.M. Smith
Cedar and jagged fir
uplift sharp barbs
against the gray
and cloud-piled sky;
and in the bay
blown spume and windrift
and thin, bitter spray
snap
at the whirling sky;
and the pine trees
lean one way.
A wild duck calls
to her mate,
and ragged
and passionate tones
stagger and fall,
and recover,
and stagger and fall,
on these stones -
are lost
in the lapping of water
on smooth, flat stones.
This is a beauty
of dissonance,
this resonance
of stony strand,
this smoky cry
curled over a black pine
like a broken
and wind-battered branch
when the wind
bends the tops of the pine
like a broken
and wind-battered branch
when the wind
bends the tops of the pines
and curdles the sky
from the north.
This is the beauty
of strength
broken by strength
and still strong

Samuel De Champlain

Questions :
1a. Find a picture of Samuel De Champlain. What does he look like? Explain the picture in 5-8 sentences.

In this picture , he has a not long and not short with black and white hair. He has a bear and a mustache. He is wearing a kind of thick clothes that I have ever seen. He is very old at that time. The picture I found is not easy and has a lot of information to write.
He is a man......

1b. Remember to answer 1a before you do this question. Who is he? What is his nationality? What is his background?

Samuel De Champlain (ca. 1570-1635) was a French geographer and explorer whose mission was to establish a joint French and Native American agricultural and fur-trading colony. In 21 voyages to New France he laid the foundations for modern Canada.
Samuel De Champlain was born at Brogue, a small Huguenot seaport town in Saintlike. He was probably born a Protestant, but sometime before 1603 he embraced the Roman Catholic faith. He had served against the Catholic League in the army of Henry IV until 1598. By 1601 he was indulging his love of travel and the sea and extending his expertise in navigation. The background is nothing.

2. What is his relationship with Canada? Why is he important to Canada?

In every way but name, Samuel De Champlain was Quebec City's and New France's Governor. Some say that the King Henry IV made him his "royal geographer", but it is unproven and may come from Marc Longboat books: Champlain never used that title.

3. When did he explore? What was happening during history at this time?

Samuel De Champlain's determination to succeed in establishing a French colony in America that earned him, since the 19Th century, to be named "The Father of New France". He was also integral in opening North America to French trade, especially the fur trade. French colonization on the shores of the Saint Lawrence River strongly began in 1634 and 1635, during the two last summers of his life, with the arrival of the many staying families recruited by Robert Giffard.

4. Where did he explore? Find a map to help you answer this question. Post the map here and then explain.

In 1603 he went on his first voyage to Canada , as geographer on a fur-trading expedition. He travelledup the Saguenay , St.Lawrence , and Richelieu rivers and used the information he collected to make a very accurate map of Canada from Hudson Bay in the north down to the Great Lakes. In 1604 , Champiain made his second trip to North America. He was looking for a place where French people could make a permanent settlement. Champiain remained for three years , exploreing the Atlantic coast from the Bay of Fundy down to Cape Cod. On his third trip in 1608 , Champlain founded a settlement and trading post along the St.Lawrence River that eventually became the city of Quebec. It was the first permanentwhite settlement in Canada , which makes Quebec the oldest city in Canada.

5. Why did he explore? What were his reasons for exploration?
Because he want discover a water route across the American continent! He wasthe founder of Quebec.Hwas sent by King Henri IVand set up trading posts. He set up the posts Port Royal , and Kebec (Algonquin word for Quebec , where the river narrows.)I think that he was sent mostly to make settlements for France , to gain more land.

6. How did he explore? What transportation methods did he use?

REFLECTION

1. What have you learned since September in Canadian Studies? (Or since you started to take the class)
I have learned how to write an essay. There are 2 kind of essays we have learned. They are Personal Narrative Essay and Exposition Essay. The first one is talking about a story that is happened on yourself. The second one is talking about some example of the topic of the essay. I also learned how to write a reading log. Every reading log should have page , date , author and literary genre on the top of it. Then , you should write what is it about , the questions after reading , the new words you haven't learned before , your favourite part and your least favourite part. I learned a lot of new words in the provincial exam and we got into a group and make a lot of fun. We have made a viking ship together , it make us know more about it , so interesting!

2. What is the most memorable lesson you remember? (if you weren't here, maybe at another school)
The most memorable lesson for me in this school is the lesson that Ms.Chan told us to make the viking ship as a group of three. BO , LYM and I are in a group. When we were trying to make our viking ship. It had a lot of things when we plan it. At first , we have no material do make it. At the end of that class , we decided to use two big bottles to make it , but the next class , when we decided to make it , Ms.Chan took a lot of material :paper boxes , small kites , etc. So we started make it together. First , we cut the paper box and make it together looks like a ship. Then put the adhesive tape on it many many times that it can keep the water away. We found out a big , long truncheon and use it as the ship's back stay. Next , we cut a lot of red "flags" and stick them on the viking ship.
3. Think about your life as a student here since September. Have you changed? How?
I have changed a lot. I didn't do my homework very much last term. This term , I try not to be lazy and do my homework to get a better mark. I didn't like to talk too much and to have a performances , I can feel I like it now. I can write more sentences in an essay and can write a long reading log. Just a little bit changed I think...

4. What is your goal for yourself by June? What is your plan to study?
I want to get a better mark. I don't want to get the same mark as this term. I want to change each of my homework better. I need to write more to change my way of writing. And I need to do all of my homework and try my best to do it.

5. What are you most proud of in school since September? Have you done your best?
I didn't done my best. I wanted to be better , but I just lazy and forget something when I was doing some of my homework. The most thing I was proud of is to make the puppet show and the vikingship. That's a good way to connect with other students and we can use our hand to make our own things.

Bonus
1. Is there anything else you want to tell me or reflect about?

Just to help me to get a good mark...Also , I would help me myself.

Final Essay For this Term

Explorations can create conflict and misunderstanding

__In this world , lands were always be found out by explorations. There were many kinds of explorations long time ago. Some of them found a new land and take care with the native people , and some were not. When the explorers got on to the land , most of native people won't let them on and they would be looking strange at them. If the explorers can't give the things they like or need , the native people may not welcome to them. If their language are not the same , that would be very difficult for them to conmmunicate. That's may be very easy to create conflict and misunderatanding.

__Also , some great people find a land but lost his life. Mr.Magellan--the man who found India was killed by native people. He in order to conquer this fertile and rich land , he had a lot of bold ambitions to do this. He attempted to use the native people's conflict to achieve his purpose , but in a conflict with local tribes , the Magellan was dead.

__Magellan fleet last Nov.28,1520 exit of the Strait of 550 kilometers in length into the vast Pacific Ocean.Magellan led the remaining three boats started the journey across the South China Sea. At first , they sail north , began to change after the voyage to the northwest and the direction of flight due west to the Moluccas. Although Magellan awarded of the Moluccas near the equator , but still command the fleet crossed the equator , they sailed to the north latitude of 10 degree near by the water area.

__However , there were a little foods on the boat and water to eat and drink. The most terrible thing is that almost everyone on the boat infected with the scurvy.

__Soon , Magellan become the new protector of Christians. He was in a conflict between two leaders of the island. April 21,1512 night , Magellan led his 60 men took three boats to their and disaster killed by axes.

__Now , you can see he was one of the explorer that was killed by the conflict of the exploration. The explorers won't create conflict and misunderstanding if they just wanted to open their mind. The people from the same country as the explorers must be wanted to have a bigger house , a bigger land , they must let the explorers to find a new land and make some of the people can live there. Some explorer started to argue with these native people and then they started war. That's why exploration can create conflict and misunderstanding.

ESSAY PLAN

EXPLORATION ESSAY
__There are many explorers from all over the world who had been sent to many places to find a new place and they learned a lot of life experiences from other people. That is called “exploration”. There are many kinds of resources that the explores have ever seen when they got into a new place. The countries can change their difference resources to make their relations well. Both them would get the things they needed and be happy.
__There are many useful resources in the world so that many countries would send some people to be the explores and let them to find things. Long time ago, there was no plane and other things that can carry you to the sky and to look down all of the land. Many explorers use their boats and some pirate would use their Viking ships to find a new place. Most people would know a lot of things about other countries when then come back to their countries. They would show others what they learned from other countries. It’s a good way for a country that is developing. Every country needs to learn things from others one country’s brains are not better than two countries’ brains. Everyone needs to learn from each other so that they can learn from each other.
__
Exploration is very important for countries because many countries have a lot of people and there living place is small. Jacques Cartier (December 31, 1491–September 1, 1557) was a French explorer who claimed what is now Canada for France. He was the first European to describe the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River, which he named "The Country of Canada's", after the Iroquois names for the two big settlements he saw at Steadicam (Quebec City) and at Haulage (Montreal Island). He did a lot of things for Canadian people. A new land for a country is so important that many people can have a bigger place to live. That’s why exploration is so important to countries.
__
Exploration is important because it can change the relationship between two countries. A country must need to change their thinking, their things to make their country more strong. Exploration from each country must be the most important people between them. They know a lot about the other countries. They change their thinking and that can help their countries develop faster than before. Two countries change their knowledge then their relation would be better than before. They can get what they would need from each other. Exploration is important for countries. Countries can get many sources from other lands and can find more land to live and can change the relationship between two countries.

THINGS ABOUT THIS WEEK

This week , I learned how to write the literary paragraph and then about how to write the essay. This week's test I had a bad mark again , I known that I need to read the english meaning of each word , not just find the meaning in my electronic dictionary.I hope next time I can do better!

LITERARY ESSAY

There are many kinds of conflict in the world. Some people don't mind that , some people would show their bravery. In both "Sir Gawain and the Knight" and "The Sniper". Bravery plays an important role.In each case, it's a way to show that the main character is very brave.
In this story "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", Sir Gawain is a brave character who is fearless of death by striking the Green Knight's head and keeping an appointment to the Green Knight in the next year.Sir Gawain is one of the protagonist who shows his bravery attitude when he strike the Green Knight's head down. For example, "Gawain swung the axe and struck the Green Knight's neck, cutting his head clear off his body."Thus, he is a neat worker and he is so confident that quickly finished cut the Green Knight's head.In addition , he is brave when he know that to meet the Green Knight is feared dead.He still go to see him. In other words, he kept his promise to the Green Knight by saying the Green Castle." Hence , it means that he is a man of one's word and he is very brave to face death. This show of heroic acts shows Sir Gawain's bravery attitude. Finally , being bravery is a trait of Sir Gawain , he is a knight who has cool-head when he face to death.
In the story,"The Sniper".The sniper is a clever character who has a cool-head when he was hurt by bandaging himself after the other sniper shoots him and comes up with ideas to shoot his enemy. The sniper is one of the protagonists who shows his cleverness when he bandaging himself after the other sniper shoots him. For instance, "Then taking out his field dressing , he ripped open the packet with his knife. He broke the neck of the iodine bottle and let the bitter fluid drop into the wound. A paroxysm of pain swept through him. He placed the cotton wadding over the wound and wrapped the dressing over it.He tied the ends with his teeth."Therefore, he is very brave at that time. He didn't shout anymore when he was shot by the bullet from another sniper . He knows that if he made a little voice, the enemy would shoot him together. He needs to finish his work, tokill the other sniper that he ahs a cool-head. In the short story, the sniper is so clever that he came up with ideas to shoot his enemy. In another words, the sniper play dead and then killed the other sniper."the sniper dropped his left hand over the roof and left it hang, life lessly. After a few moments, he lets the rifle drop to the street .Then he sank to the roof, dragging his hand with him."Hence , he is very clever that at that dangerous moment, at that time everyone wouldn't have a cool-head. But he knows how to make his work more easier. Maybe at that time , the other sniper had known where the sniper is but the sniper didn't know where is the other sniper, so he played dead and suddenly shot the other sniper and killed him. This idea is very dangerous , if the other sniper didn't believe the sniper was dead and then shoot him , that wouldbe very bad , the sniper would be dead. Finally , this story shows the sniper is a cool-head character and he is brave and clever . He is the symbol of sniper's bravery.

2009.3.15

Today is a sunny day , I didn't go outside and play.

I found "The sniper" 's translation on the Internet:The Sniper(狙击手)
